Like me, does your pulse race whenever you catch a glimpse of some old vinyl records? Like when you happen to be invited to someone's house for the first time, and on being shown around suddenly out comes the record collection (usually only a modest 50 to 100 items or so, but nevermind...) and you've just gotta take a closer look. Us collectors are a bunch of showoffs, so here's a few of my recent disc-overies (sorry, I just had to say that !)...

I'm basically a "chart-a-holic" and this includes Top 40 charts from around the world (not just my local ones). So I don't restrict myself to only English-language material - I've got a keen interest in stuff from France, Germany, Japan etc. as well as Australia, the USA and Britain.

Booka Hyland - "TRANSISTOR / IS IT ME" (Leedon LS-6051)
This guy was an early rock & roll vocalist in Australia. This is one of his more hard to find singles from 1960.

Mike Oldfield - "THE WIND CHIMES (PART II)" (Soundpage Flexi-disc 1032431XS)
This is a rare US black flexi-disc that was included with the January 1988 edition of US magazine "Keyboard".

Meat Loaf - "DEAD RINGER FOR LOVE / MORE THAN YOU DESERVE"
(EPIC / CLEVELAND INTERNATIONAL ES 698)
A nice white label promotional pressing from Australia of his 1981 single featuring guest vocals by Cher.

The Dave Miller Set - "HOPE / HAVING A PARTY" (Spin EK-2277)
I was really blown over to come across this one - an excellent piece of sixties Aussie psych rock from the man who brought us "Mr. Guy Fawkes". Rare original Australian 1968 pressing.

Billy Idol - "MONY MONY / BABY TALK / UNTOUCHABLES / DANCING WITH MYSELF"
(Chrysalis X-11821)
Jumping ahead a few years to 1981 with an uncommon Australian 7" EP by Mr. Gen X himself.

Milk & Honey - "DANCE / SHA-LA-LA-MAN" (Albert Productions AP-10725)
Here's a great piece for Abba collectors - it's a very rare 1975 Australian "A" label promotional pressing
of their cover of Abba's "Dance (While The Music Still Goes On)" - it actually made the charts in Brisbane, so I gather they came from Queensland? (not the band from Israel that won the Eurovision song contest).

Jimmy Nicol - "HUSKY / DON'T COME BACK" (Astor AP-1058)
This guy was a drummer from the UK who got to be one of The Beatles (if only for a short time).
He filled in for Ringo Starr for the Fab Four's 1964 Australian tour while Mr. Starkey was "under the weather". This thing is quite hard to find, so the bloodhound was very pleased with himself….

The Dee Jays - "OFF SHORE / TOY BALLOONS" (Festival FK-263)
.. and oh dear - what should I find right underneath Jimmy Nicol? J'OK's (Johnny O'Keefe, for those unfamiliar with the early days of Australian R&R) backing band - an original copy on red Festival of their 1962 hit "Toy balloons" (the A side's cool too…)

Bill Haley - "YODEL YOUR BLUES AWAY / WITHIN THIS BROKEN HEART OF MINE"
(Grass Roots 6198176)
This is a hard to find 1977 single of early (pre-rock & roll Comets) country material.

The Hi-Lo's - "LITTLE MISS TEARDROPS / WAKE UP, SILLY BOY" (Reprise R-20210)
The US vocal quartet that did "My Baby Just Cares For Me" - excellent 1963 pure pop.

Ray Charles - "ONE MINT JULEP / LET'S GO" (Impulse IK-30)
His 1961 US top ten hit - bloody hard to find Australian pressing on Festival's Impulse label.

Seiko Matsuda with Donnie Wahlberg - "THE RIGHT COMBINATION / GOODBYE MY BABY"
(CBS 6560837) - Seiko was one of Japan's biggest pop stars in the 1980s - this is her duet with New Kid On The Block Donnie Wahlberg - Aussie pressing sought after by Japanese Seiko collectors.

I'm sure every collector can relate to this..........
You go past a thrift shop/second hand record store/garage sale/trash & treasure market (or wherever your hounddog nose sniffs out the smell of vinyl) - nothing better to do with your time, so why not kill 30 minutes or so and take a look....

There's a small pile of vinyl records jammed between a few books and at first look they're the same old junk you always see (granny's castoffs, Mario Lanza sings about drunken princes etc.). You're just about to put them down with disgust when suddenly a familiar record label / cover catches your eye - your first thought is, it's going to be interesting to me, but probably not the one I've been searching for since forever - but your blood suddenly races when you realise what you're holding is worth all the tea in China to you - don't get your hopes up too soon, though - you'll look at the condition next and find it looks like it's been laser etched (but not with a laser, more like a razor) ....

You hold your breath and take a careful look at the condition - absolute mint!!!!

Drinks all round! You feel like you've just fallen in love again (if only for an hour or two).
